Bringing Art Home From Vacation
While on vacation, you may find a piece of artwork you absolutely love — perhaps even one that is already framed. But before bringing it home, consider a few things: Do you love the frame as much as the art? Would the artist or dealer adjust the price if you purchased it unframed? And how much will it cost to safely ship it home?
If you decide to bring home a painted canvas without the frame, ask the artist or dealer to carefully remove it — never cut the canvas off the frame. To protect the artwork during travel, cover the painted surface with a smooth, acid-free protective paper (called glassine), gently roll it (not tightly), and place it in a sturdy tube. Once home, your framer can help you choose the perfect frame to complement and protect your artwork.
For smaller works on paper, protect both sides with acid-free protective paper and place them between sturdy pieces of cardboard. Once home, bring the artwork to your framer so it can be properly preserved and displayed.
With a little planning, you can bring your vacation artwork home safely and enjoy it for years to come.
